Another gaff from Michelle Obama, I think she is trying to be like Terresa Heinz-Kerry.
This time at a recent rally Michelle said, “We left corporate America, which is a lot of what we are asking young people to do. Don’t go into corporate America. You know, become teachers, work for the community, be a social worker, be a nurse. Those are careers we need and we are encouraging our you people to do that. But if you make that choice, as we did, to move out of the money making industry, into the helping industry, then your salaries will respond.” “..our bright young stars are going into corporate law or hedge fund management.” A dig at Hillary Clinton, a corporate lawyer and Chelsea Clinton, a hedge fund manager.
This is absurd! Michelle worked for corporations, most recently for a hospital where her salary was $311,000! Barack Obama surely publish his books with a publisher that was a corporation.
According to tax returns, Michell earned $51,200 as a director on the board for Treehouse. A corporation that sold to wal-mart and closed plants (see video below). And $271,618 working for the corporation that owned the University of Chicago Hospitals.
Michelle also worked for a company that represented one of the largest corporations, and the Democrat whipping child, Wal-Mart.
Lets take this a little further, Some schools especially private schools are corporations. Hospitals, where social workers and nurses work, are corporations.
Corporations provide jobs for every day people. I imagine that the United Church of Christ, that the Obama’s have belonged to for 18 years, is a non-profit corporation.
I used to have a corporation that employed several nurses and clerical workers. Corporations are not EVIL, they are necessary to be in business. Someone may want to sue your company and a corporation protects your personal assets.
Most small businesses, about 70% are corporations. Accountants are usually corporations. The Universities the Obama’s got their degrees from and most universities are corporations.
Corporation pay the lions share of the taxes in cities, states, and on a national basis.
Michelle and Barack Obama are probably a corporation. The Democrat party is probably a corporation. Get real, corporations provide jobs. Michelle is a Princeton and Harvard degree she knows this.
How Michelle ruins corporations

Even from the quote you provided, it’s obvious her intention was to say that people should get out of the yuppie mentality that preoccupied the ’80′s and ’90′s and get back to careers which help the common good. Surely Mrs. Obama is not suggesting every American stop working for corporations, but to suggest that a broad, general social movement back to those occupations which serve the greater good of the whole instead of the financial good of the few. That we would be better served if more doctors worked at hospitals than in private practices. That our education system would be better served if some of the smartest taught instead of went for the big bucks for companies which would monopolize their resources.
In terms of her salary, I would say that she made $311,000 proves that you can avoid the temptation to be obscenely wealthy and still obtain employment which will pay you handsomely while simultaneously utilizing your talents to make a bigger social difference than, let’s say, allowing a mega-millionaire to become a billionaire. For example, civil lawyers are paid extremely well, but most of them could make much more money as corporate lawyers. Financial comfort, or even wealth, can be a legitimate goal, but it can also be achievable while serving a higher cause, as well.

Sue,
Thank you, for the comments. I am just trying to get some truth out there.
The Great Geno,
Why is everyone trying to explain what Michelle Obama really meant to say? She is a Princeton and Harvard graduate, she knows exactly what she is saying and how to say it!
I was a nurse for 15 years and owned my on company, that employed many dozens of people. Hospitals and Doctors are corporations, I know this from contracting with them.
What is wrong with making money? Temptation, how about a necessity? Hillary Clinton is a corporate attorney.
The top three billionares are Democrats. 1. Warren Buffet, 2. Mr. Hule, a Mexican TV tycoon, and 3. Bill Gates, the holly grail to Democrats. How many people do you think they employee. Are they are the “legitimate” ones you write about?
A lot of people that have already been successful in the private sector do go into teaching, and get paid well. I would rather have someone who was already successful teaching me how to be successful, not someone who think they know how to be successful.
I am back in college right now and I am teaching my professor how to accomplish the projects that we are doing. And he is a new Master in Fine Art (MFA) graduate.
I don’t think it’s “what she really meant to say;” I think that’s what she actually said. And to be fair, she didn’t say “don’t work for corporations,” but made a statement about corporate America. I don’t think that’s splitting hairs. The term “corporate America” undeniably has a certain subtext in our culture which goes beyond employment at a corporation.
What’s wrong with making money? Nothing. Which is why I said, “Financial comfort, or even wealth, can be a legitimate goal.” The temptation would be to accrue obscenely large amounts of money at the expense of utilizing your talents to contribute to a higher cause, or to accumulate it by unscrupulous means. A favorite person of the Republicans said that. Who was that? *checking* Oh yeah, JESUS.
I’m not sure about Mr. Hule (could be a real jerk for all I know), but Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have done a lot to help out the common good and haven’t sold their souls, so to speak, to achieve their wealth (as far as I know). The same could be said for George H.W. Bush or John McCain. Contrast that with Ken Lay, who made money he didn’t need at the expense of hundreds of his workers retirements. Obviously there are examples of Democrats who would fall into this category, whom I’m sure you could list if you’re so inclined. That was the temptation and illegitimacy I was referring to.
Here’s something interesting you may enjoy. What party does the four richest people in Congress belong to? Democrats! A little ammunition to throw back at the next liberal who calls Republicans a bunch of evil rich white guys. John Kerry is actually the richest:

Thanks for posting my dissent, by the way. You say you are “just trying to get some truth out there.” I’ll check back so I can make sure some of “Gene’s truth” gets told, too.
Not to engage in shameless self-promotion, but I always welcome opposing viewpoints of my blog, if you have the time and are so inclined.
Sincerely,
The Great Geno
Subtext, pop culture, its all about the evil corporations. Please, be real, if it wasn’t for corporate america this nation would not be what it is.
Corporations invest in America, provide jobs for American’s and others around the world.
Corporate America is just another “label”, just like the many other labels Democrats used to keep people down and segregated. If they continue to play on peoples fears and people let them then they have the power.
Buffet and Gates then, why do they need 60,000,000,000+ why do they own the land their companies are on? Why don’t they just “redistribute the wealth?
Clinton said she will just “Take it from them.”
Why not be like Russia if you get to much money like the oil tycoon there, just take his money and put him in jail.
What are unscrupulous means? By who’s definition? Other than the rule of law. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.
You forget the great Nancy Pelosi: The New York Post reports: By NILES LATHEM
A bill passed by the House raises the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour everywhere except American Samoa – and Speaker Nancy Pelosi is being questioned whether that exception was made to benefit Del Monte-owned StarKist, which employs most of the island’s work force.
January 13, 2007 — WASHINGTON – Red-faced House Speaker Nancy Pelosi went into damage-control mode yesterday after Republicans charged she slipped a loophole into the Democrats’ just-passed minimum-wage bill to benefit a company in her San Francisco district.
The legislation hiking the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour covered the entire United States and all its territories – except for one: American Samoa
You can say “corporate America” is a label Democrats use. That’s my point. The argument wasn’t against corporations as a whole, but the mentality and culture that is produced by “Corporate America,” regardless of who created the label. A culture of greed instead of capitalism. A culture of selfishness instead of patriotism.
Stay on issue. You can’t attack everybody who’s arguing for the common good as being Communist. You can support the public good without being communist. For example, by heading a hospital at the wage of $311,000 a year. We’re not talking about limiting people’s ability to amass wealth. We’re talking about living and producing for the good of God and Country. If you come by great wealth while doing so, then more power to you.
You say Democrats create labels to play to people’s fears, and then attack somebody suggesting monetary gain is not the root of all that is holy as being Communist. You ask if someone who said, twice, that pursuit of money is not bad if we should lock up all the rich people.
Question: am I talking to Ayn Rand or Jonah Goldberg??
Corporate America is a term to bring down the good work that people do by lumping greedy people into a capitalist system. Liberalism is all about redistributing wealth according to what someone thinks is fair. Giving someone that ability gives them power over you. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. What is fair is that hard work is rewarded not torn down by an egotistical liberal.
The issue is that Michelle Obama is the egotistical liberal telling people what they should do, when she does the exact opposite.
Ayn Rand and Jonah Goldberg, from what I know, seem to think about freedom and capitalism as a persons right to independence. Other than Rand’s view on religion they both sound pretty grounded in conservatism.
Michele Obama ought to stay home and take care of the kids and just shut up if she wants her husband to have any chance of winning the election. It just seems that everytime she opens her mouth she says something completely idiotic. What the heck is she doing advising people not to work for corporations. For someone who graduated from from Princeton, she sure has a knack for making dumb remarks. I gave her the benefit of the doubt when she said “for the first time in her life she was proud to be an American” but no more.
Joseph,
Your are correct, she is a very educated woman. Unfortunately she bought into the liberal mentality that America is inherently bad for the world.
She is reminding me of Terresa Heinz-Kerry and how her statements made it look as if she was the candidate.
I think her Baracks statement this last we provided a look inside of their agenda. Barack said, “We have the power to remake the world as it should be.”
Maybe just start with what we might be able to change in our own country.
Did Michelle Obama recently say ” I can’t beleive I’m still paying for Hardard” ?
It’s funny she gives this “work in nonprofits” speech to people raising a family of four on $10/hour jobs, and their kids have holes in their shoes. This bitch is out to lunch.
R Bruce,
Almost, I think it was that her and Barack just recently paid off their student loans. And If it wasn’t for Barack writing two books they would not be where they are today.
Except for Louis Farrakhan and Tony Rezco he would not be a Senator and own the house and land they live on.
She said earlier that her father worked two jobs to send her there. That appears to be a lie now.
Mr. Roach,
I think Michelle is trying to out do Terresa Heinz-Kerry for the worst gaffs.
The Obama’s are dangerous for America, they would drive this great country right, LEFT, into a depression with their socialist agenda.
