Finally, President Bush asks Congress to left the Federal ban on drilling for oil and natural gas off the coasts, on land, in ANWAR, and the Outer Continental Shelf. He also asked for less regulation so refineries and nuclear plants could be built. This would have a drastic effect on the speculation of oil prices. The price would fall considerably, possibly $50 a barrel to start, and we would be more energy independent.
The President is asking this now because 67% of the American people support drilling for oil NOW!
America is the only country on the planet that outlaws drilling for oil in coastal waters! Brazil is energy independent not because they use sugar cane ethanol, only 15% of their needs, but because they get 85% of their oil from off shore drilling!
Their is enough oil in the Rocky Mountains to replace three Saudi Arabia’s! But not so fast, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter is proposing that drilling stop three months out of each year. This is for the animal welfare, like the ground hog!
The Democrat Party along with the MSM rejected this energy proposal as soon as the President was finished talking. this rejection came from Democrats like Sen. Harry Reid, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi. The Democrat party has blocked drilling, nuclear, solar, wind or creating new refineries for over 30 years! Most of the alternatives were blocked by the Democrat enviromarzists. Even wind projects were blocked due to migratory bird patterns.
Sen. Barack Obama is totally against this energy plan as well. He contends that it will only help a few pennies. His plan? Tax the oil companies profits by 25%. Tell the oil companies to drill somewhere else. Sen Obama if 8.5c per gallon of gas is too much profit how about the 18c a gallon that federal taxes take? And that does not include state taxes. By your standards the Government is making more than twice the profits that the oil companies do!
One reason they give is that there are already areas leased by the oil companies that are not being used. Wrong, the leases are not long enough for the oil companies to get through the licensing process. This is because the Democrat will sue until time runs out. There must be a limit to the law suits and license process time.
Another excuse is that it will hurt tourism. The rigs will be 60 miles off the coast, too far to see.
The next excuse is there will be oil spills. Wrong the technology is better now, did any rigs leak after the major hurricanes Rita and Katrina? NO.
Then they say the caribou in ANWAR would be adversely affected. They said the same thing in the 70′s about the Alaska pipeline. Wrong the herds actually combined and now have tripled in size.
It took doubling the price of oil in the 70′s to get the pipeline passed through a Democrat Congress that had been blocking it for more than three years! The pipeline was built in 3 yrs, half the time they said it would take.
Bill Richardson, former Clinton adviser and Obama’s energy adviser said, “we will have to sacrifice” and “drilling is not the answer.” Bill, when you were the energy secretary you could have prevented this. Why should your word mean anything now? Especially since you are towing the same tired position.
According to CBS California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says “As Governor of California, I will do everything in my power to fight the federal government on this issue and prevent any new offshore drilling.” Maybe the residents of California would like the royalties to pay off the debt Gov. Schwarzenegger has run up.
The Governors for New Jersey, Gov. Jon Corzine, and North Carolina, Gov. Mike Easley have also voiced their opposition to offshore drilling.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist has come out in support of drilling in his state. Kudo’s to you Governor Crist.
The MSM is pushing back against this with as many enviromarxists they can find. The MSM and the Democrat party is trying to make our lives as difficult as possible. They want us miserable so they can win an election.
President Bush 6/18/08
The Democrats want to nationalize the oil companies. What have they done right so far? Social Security, NO. They cannot even balance the IRS! You can also read more on this at my previous post.

Thanks for posting the article, was certainly a great read!
Thank you for caring about our country.

FYI, the Republican Congress did nothing about drilling for oil either. In fact, in the 20 years that the executive ban on drilling has been in place, 12 of those years has been under Republican leadership. If Bush has been calling for Congress to lift the congressional ban on drilling since he took office, which he claimed he has, why didn’t the Republican-led Congress go along with him? Just trying to keep the facts in perspective. Personally, I think both parties stink on many issues. This article seems to make it look like Republicans have all the answers and the Democrats are the only thing standing in the way of utopia. Not so.
Bush said he’s been asking Congress to life the ban on offshore drilling since he became President. For the first 5 and 1/2 years of his presidency, Congress was controlled by Republicans and they never lifted the ban. In fact, Bush himself didn’t lift the executive ban until just a few weeks ago. Can this comment get posted? These are just facts, no argument. Thanks.
I Agree. The center and leftist public did not support it.
Even if the ban is lifted the enviromarxists will just continue to tie the permit process up in the courts or by creating blocks with Democrat legislatures.
But lets ignore the issue and go on vacation for 5 weeks!
This is the most ridiculous article i have ever read. This so called “significant decrease in gas prices” could not be any more false. If we were to begin drilling in ANWR (currently the most debated area) we would probably extract enough oil to last us only for one full year. The whole project would lower our imported oil by only 4%.
The real problem at hand is our country’s reliance on oil. We consume about 25% of consumed oil. We need to open up our eyes and look to new resources. Why push to drill drill drill when drilling would end up hurting us in the long run?
Then explain why OPEC keeps cutting supply to increase cost?
Good work John
“Their is enough oil in the Rocky Mountains to replace three Saudi Arabia’s!”
Are you kidding me! Check your facts. Saudi has over 266 billion barrels as of Jan. 2009. Are you claiming that the Rocky Mountains contain nearly 800 billion barrels of oil?
Preposterous! Show me your source for the Rocky Mountain claim.

connect the pipeline or live within our means. digging holes in our own yard only makes a mess; If it were prosperous, we would have been doin that in the first place
